What does God’s Word
say?
“Do not be
anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard
your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
So how can Christians use the news to do good? When you
read or hear news, whether you get it on your phone or TV or wherever, stop and
pray. God is not unaware of the life issues that concern us, and He is
all-powerful, able to act for His glory and our good in all situations. And He
tells us to pray.
Here are some real headlines, with suggestions for how to
pray about them. Once this becomes a habit, you’ll never think about news in
the same way. We can earnestly seek this way of communing with our God!
“More than 1 Million
cases of coronavirus have been reported in the US.”
“Lord, be with all
people who have this disease. Bring Your comfort, healing, and peace to them
and those who love them. Help our medical personnel understand and find answers
to cure. Help them to prevent any more attacks.”
“A second round of the
coronavirus is ‘inevitable.’ “
“God of Truth and
Life, help us know what to believe. Help us to always hope in You and not
depend on the world and what it thinks. Help us to use this opportunity when
many are in despair to bring Your peace and Light.”
“Sister opens up about
ER doctor who died by suicide.”
“Lord, help the
people involved see Your Truth. Heal those who are hurting, Great Physician.”
“US weekly jobless claims hit 3.84 million,
topping 30 million over the last 6 weeks.”
“Father Who made
the world, be with those who have lost their jobs. Help them to have hope. Help
them to find new work. Help then to view work as Your blessing. Meet all their
financial needs.”
“Pelosi says she is
‘satisfied’ with Biden’s response to sexual assault allegation.”
Omniscient God, who
alone decides right and wrong, bring Your Truth to our world. Let those in
power know how much You honor individuals and care for their wall-being. Bring
Your justice when it seems like evil is prevailing.”
